Baking soda can tackle some of the most challenging of kitchen cleans. First up—the oven and microwave. Both of these appliances see their fair share of grease, grime, and caked-on food. Sprinkle baking soda on the affected area and spray with a water and vinegar solution, then let it sit. Or, make a paste from baking soda and warm water, and spread it over the stain. Wipe the appliance clean with a damp cloth, buffing if needed. Note: avoid glass doors. As baking soda is abrasive, it may leave scratches.
Baking soda is also a great natural deodoriser. Leave a small box in your fridge, or at the bottom of your rubbish bin, to keep the air smelling fresh. Or sprinkle some across your kitchen bench after a smelly cooking session—no more odour.
Bonus tip—baking soda and warm water can also remove stubborn coffee stains from the inside of mugs!
Is your basin draining slowly? A bit of baking soda might just do the trick. Pour a small amount of baking soda down the drain, and let it sit for a few minutes. Follow up with some vinegar and hot water, and your drain should be good as new.
Because baking soda is abrasive, it also does wonders for dirty grout and tiles. Grab a damp scrubbing brush and dip it in baking soda for a 5-star clean. This method also works well for soap scum on the bottom of the shower, and stains in the bathtub.
Have you noticed a dull, white build-up on your showerhead? It could be calcium deposits, usually caused by hard water. Make a baking soda and vinegar solution and pour it into a sturdy plastic bag. Place the bag over your showerhead, making sure it’s entirely submerged in the solution, and fasten with a rubber band. Leave it overnight, and your showerhead should be good as new!
